Update: Washington State Internet Voting Bill Defeated

Update: Washington State Internet Voting Bill Defeated

by johnbonifaz | Feb 18 2009

House Bill 1624 authorizing the Washington Secretary of State, Sam Reed, to begin a pilot internet voting program has died in the House because of the significant financial impact the program would have on counties and individual taxpayers that was not reflected in the original fiscal note. House Committee members became aware of the actual price tag of the program after local voting integrity activists sent documentation on the real costs of internet voting programs in other states. Thanks to John Gideon and Ellen Theisen of Voters Unite for their hard work in creating awareness and taking action on HB 1624. Voter Action will continue to monitor and advocate against internet voting legislation being proposed across the country.

Proposed internet voting legislation in Washington state raises questions about the security of online voting systems.

On the surface it sounds like a terrific idea: Let members of the armed forces serving abroad and state residents living in foreign lands, vote via the Internet so that their ballots can be tabulated in a timely fashion.

Early voting bill quickly tabled by House, not likely to return

By Dave Forster The Virginian-Pilot Jan 20 2009

The latest attempts to allow early voting and easier absentee voting in Virginia faltered out of the gate Monday while a measure to restore voting rights to nonviolent felons barely survived.

A Republican-controlled House subcommittee tabled most of the bills, which means they likely won't return in the six-week legislative session that started Wednesday. Similar bills have failed in past years.
Republicans argued that the 17 excuses people can use to cast an absentee ballot before an election already address the conflicts people may have.

Denver election officials were breathing a little easier Saturday after they determined that 11,000 mail-in ballots they feared were missing were actually never sent by a vendor.
The U.S. Postal Service said Friday afternoon that its Denver mail processing facility received 10,364 ballots on Oct. 16 and delivered them within a couple days.
But the California printing company hired by Denver Elections said it delivered 21,450 ballots to the postal facility on that date.

Mail-In Ballots Can Be Marked With Black Or Blue Pen, Pencil

SAN ANTONIO -- While early voting begins Monday, thousands of Bexar County residents can begin their voting as soon as they receive their mail-in ballot, although some are finding the ballots confusing.

Barbara Steele said she was very excited to learn she was eligible for a mail-in ballot, but she said she found the instructions confusing. One note -- No. 4 -- stated ballots should be completed using only the marker provided.

The problem? No marker or writing instrument was included with the ballot.

Voters fret about errors, glitches and strange alliances

There's an agitated vibe at the El Paso County Clerk and Recorder's election department Tuesday morning.

Though election day's only three weeks away and mail-in voting has started, residents waiting in line worry about missing and mistake-bearing paperwork.

Mary O'Donnell waits clutching two mail-in ballots. One is her own, but she wants a replacement after she mistakenly printed her name on the return envelope instead of signing. The other ballot is her roommate's, which arrived despite a data-entry error that shipped it with the wrong ZIP code.
