A computer scientist friend calls it whack-a-mole, the way online voting pitchmen keep popping up to announce they've fixed security problems and voting over the internet is now secure. You look at their plans and find they're as full of holes as ever.

Soldiers fighting for their country find it hard to participate in the elections that choose leaders back home, say those who support letting them vote by e-mail.
 
Authorization for overseas voters to send in their ballots by e-mail or fax is headed for its final steps in the Legislature, over the objections of those who worry about online voter fraud.

Proposed internet voting legislation in Washington state raises questions about the security of online voting systems.

On the surface it sounds like a terrific idea: Let members of the armed forces serving abroad and state residents living in foreign lands, vote via the Internet so that their ballots can be tabulated in a timely fashion.
