Circuit court judge, county clerk, and election officials among eight indicted for gaming elections in 2002, 2004, 2006.

Those of us who have demanded transparent voting systems because we understand that only the ability for complete citizen oversight and transparency can effectively counter those who would game elections, have been disingenuously criticized over the years as somehow questioning the integrity of the hard-working, honest election officials out there.

At the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting, a statistician made a forceful argument that her field can help us do a better job of ensuring fair and representative elections, but only if we decide to let it.

The recent American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting included a session entitled "Science for Public Confidence in Election Fairness and Accuracy" and, as might be expected, computer science made a significant appearance.

Update: Washington State Internet Voting Bill Defeated

House Bill 1624 authorizing the Washington Secretary of State, Sam Reed, to begin a pilot internet voting program has died in the House because of the significant financial impact the program would have on counties and individual taxpayers that was not reflected in the original fiscal note. House Committee members became aware of the actual price tag of the program after local voting integrity activists sent documentation on the real costs of internet voting programs in other states. Thanks to John Gideon and Ellen Theisen of Voters Unite for their hard work in creating awareness and taking action on HB 1624. Voter Action will continue to monitor and advocate against internet voting legislation being proposed across the country.
