State Under Fire for Emailed Overseas Ballots

State Under Fire for Emailed Overseas Ballots

Austin Jenkins KPLU Oct 20 2010
Election watchdog groups are raising questions about the integrity of how Washington counts overseas ballots. They say Washington's policy of allowing military and overseas voters to send in their ballots as an email attachment is risky.

The groups Voter Action, Common Cause and Verified Voting have sent Republican Secretary of State Sam Reed what amounts to a cease and desist letter. They say Reed should stop accepting ballots from outside the country - including from members of the military - in PDF form via email.

Voter Action Statement in Support of Petitioners in White v. Reed

Voter Action Statement in Support of Petitioners in White v. Reed

Jul 14 2009

July 14 2009

Fundamental to our democracy is the right to cast a ballot in private, protecting the democratic process and enabling all voters to exercise freely their right to vote.

Voter Action strongly supports the claims made by the Petitioners in White et al. v. Reed et al. to protect the rights of all voters in Washington State to a secret ballot. The Washington State Constitution guarantees all voters in the state “absolute secrecy in preparing and depositing his [or her] ballot.” Washington State Constitution, Article VI, Section 6. Washington state law reiterates this guarantee: “The rights of Washington voters are protected by its constitution and laws and include…[t]he right of absolute secrecy of the vote.” RCW 29A.04.206.

Update: Washington State Internet Voting Bill Defeated

Update: Washington State Internet Voting Bill Defeated

by johnbonifaz | Feb 18 2009

House Bill 1624 authorizing the Washington Secretary of State, Sam Reed, to begin a pilot internet voting program has died in the House because of the significant financial impact the program would have on counties and individual taxpayers that was not reflected in the original fiscal note. House Committee members became aware of the actual price tag of the program after local voting integrity activists sent documentation on the real costs of internet voting programs in other states. Thanks to John Gideon and Ellen Theisen of Voters Unite for their hard work in creating awareness and taking action on HB 1624. Voter Action will continue to monitor and advocate against internet voting legislation being proposed across the country.

Proposed internet voting legislation in Washington state raises questions about the security of online voting systems.

On the surface it sounds like a terrific idea: Let members of the armed forces serving abroad and state residents living in foreign lands, vote via the Internet so that their ballots can be tabulated in a timely fashion.
